The setting for a massage session should always be a quiet, peaceful place.  It is a time for you to simply relax and escape from the mundane.  There is usually soft, relaxing music playing.  The lighting is usually low and indirect.  The area will be clean and sanitary.
If it is your first visit, you will be asked to fill out a health questionairre and consent form.  This form informs your massage therapists of any health problems or concerns, medications you are taking, and other information that can help her/him be more effective.  In some states you will also be given a copy of the therapist's Client Bill of Rights.  This document informs you of the therapist's training, areas of expertise, the cost of specific treatments, and other pertinent information.
You will be asked to remove as much of your clothing as you are comfortable with.  In a general full body massage, the practitioner will need access to your arms, legs, and back.  The therapist will usually leave the room, allowing you time to disrobe, get on the massage table, and cover yourself with a sheet, towel, and possibly a blanket.
During the actual massage, you will be asked if the pressure being used is comfortable, if certain massage techniques are comfortable, if you are warm enough, etc.  Don't be afraid to speak up if something is uncomfortable.  That is the only way the massage therapist can make your massage a positive experience.
The massage therapist may check your range of motion.  This may be done with the neck, arms, and legs by stretching techniques.  Massage can be beneficial for those with limited range of motion.
A well trained massage therapist knows his/her limits.  There are certain conditions and illness in which massage is contraindicated.  If you were to display one of these illnesses or conditions, you would be referred to the proper medical expert.
Massage therapy can be revitalizing or relaxing, depending on the type and length of the massage.  Your massage therapist may use essential oils to achieve the maximum results.
At the end of your massage, you will be given a few minutes to just relax on the massage table, and then to get dressed.  After that, your massage therapist will spend a few more minutes with you discussing the effects of the massage and any concerns you may have.
Receiving a massage should be an experience you enjoy and look forward to.
